A Celebration Event of Fifty Years of Teletext

Congleton, 25th August 2024 – Teletext people: those who worked at Ceefax, ORACLE, 4-Tel and Teletext Ltd., as well as enthusiasts and teletext artists, will get together for two full days at the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge on the weekend of 21st/22nd September 2024 to celebrate teletext.

This September sees the fiftieth anniversary of Ceefax, the world’s first teletext service. Teletext was the ground-breaking precursor to the Internet that was an introduction to information-on-demand for millions all over the world.

Although teletext was switched off for UK viewers in 2012, enthusiasts have democratised teletext so that anyone can create teletext services and teletext art but also recover real teletext services from regular domestic VHS recordings.

The event gives the public the chance to find out more about teletext and try their hand at teletext art; enter a teletext art competition; meet those who wrote, edited and ran teletext services on broadcast TV channels; flick through actual teletext services to play Bamboozle, read Digitiser and check up on the news from 50 years ago!
